"Hawaiian Baby" is in some ways the ultimate Spinanes tune--to the point that concert going fans simply referred to it as "the song." "Play the song!" they'd cry out.
The lyrics make reference to another band from the '90s, one with a similar sounding name: New Zealand's the Verlaines, as in this verse, which name checks Verlaines' frontman Graeme Downs and quotes from some of their songs:
"Graeme's down at the bar teaching hardships
[Verlaines, verlaines, verlaines...]
Trucker speed and the harm of having loose lips
Six days, Six days...
Sex and cigarettes and slow sad says he
Verlaines, verlaines, verlaines...
Santa Claus with a baby that you brought me"

I like to imagine that the song is about an affair between Graeme and Spinanes' frontwoman Rebecca Gates--though I don't think reality bears me out.
Bonus happy song
Something completely different....A decidedly wacky love song by Robyn Hitchcock called "I Got a Message For You." It asks the musical question: "If I was a hairless spinster covered in festering boils, would you still make love to me, or would you recoil?"
