Song of the day: "Don't Wait Up" by The Beat

The AV Club has this great running feature called Primer, which provides beginners' guides to different aspects of pop culture--everything from the films of Francis Ford Coppola to autobiographical comics to '70s sitcoms. The latest installment deals with power pop, which they describe as "a hooky, hard-edged backlash against rock’s ponderousness." A couple of power pop acts (e.g. Cheap Trick and The Knack) made it big, but most came up short in the popularity department in spite of huge hooks. Here is a gem from one such also-ran, The Beat.
