Athens, Ga. is the home of much more quality music than you'd otherwise expect from a town of 116,000 souls. R.E.M. and the B-52s, groups on the opposite ends of the wackiness scale, are only the most famous Athens combos. Futurebirds, who released their sophomore album in April, fall more on the R.E.M. side of things, though with a bit more twang, courtesy of the steel guitar.
